CORAL PROJECT

Find out more about coral regeneration project

OUR PROJECT

The coral regeneration project at Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives aims to regenerate the reef following coral bleaching damage. Through coral fragment replanting, we hope to assist in the recovery of the house reef. The coral regeneration project is the centre project of Best Dives Maldives Marine and Environmental activities.

Recently, our team on the island restarted the coral planting project and there are now more than twenty coral frames with replanted coral. Different kinds of coral frames and methods are tried to see what is the best possible way to grow the corals. This is monitored regularly to ensure that proper care and maintenance are applied when necessary.

GET INVOLVED

Together with the Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives team, we do coral planting events on the island and guests are encouraged to participate in planting the broken corals into different ready-made frames. Check with the Dive Centre the activity schedule of the week to see what’s the latest happening on the island. These frames will be then taken into the lagoon and will be monitored regularly by our team. Depending on the changing sea conditions, these newly planted corals may take many years to see significant growth.

You can also visit the coral garden on a guided snorkelling tour. See how the replanted corals a few years back have grown into beautiful small colonies. It is a truly rewarding experience to see how a small initiative can help regenerate the marine ecosystem for future generations to enjoy.
